The 'evilution' of Charles Addams's singularly eccentric family began long before the television and film interpretations made them icons of American popular culture. Addams first created Morticia, Lurch, and The Thing in a cartoon published in a 1938 issue of the New Yorker--though he hadn't named them at the time, or even conceived of a family unit. (When he did name the deadly matriarch, he was inspired by the Yellow Pages listing for 'Morticians.') Other characters were born and developed in a multitude of Addams's cartoons over the next twenty-six years, before the cheerfully creepy clan debuted on ABC television in 1964 and later on the big screen, twice, in 1991 and 1993.

Charles Addams Cartoons on Display in Connecticut

The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, will be holding an exhibit of Charles Addams's cartoons.

GREENWICH, CT.- The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, presents approximately 40 framed, original cartoon artworks of Charles Addams, the beloved cartoonist of The New Yorker and creator of the characters known as the “The Addams Family.” The exhibition Charles Addams: Cartoonist, on view from October 3, 2009 through January 24, 2010, is organized for the Bruce Museum by the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation. The show provides a sampling of the creative wit and sometimes macabre but always lovable humor of Addams’ oeuvre. (Info pulled from artknowledgenews.com)

Charles Addams the Motor Enthusiast

A couple of nice photos of Charles Addams participating in the motor world have been uploaded on the Henry Ford Blog. Addams was well known as a car hobbyist and even passed away in one of his vehicles, says the Henry Ford article.

In honor of the Addams Family's creator, Charles Addams's birthday (the 7th of January), mental floss has put together a list of ten interesting facts about the man.

1. Many of the gags from the series and the movies are taken right from Addams’ old comics.

2. Charles and his third wife, Tee, got married in a pet cemetery to reflect their ghoulish sense of humor.

5. Even if he didn’t dress the part, he decorated his apartment in exactly the manner you would expect.

9. Charles was distantly related to John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Sam Adams.
