Reviews are now out for the Addams Family's Broadway opening... any they're not exactly pretty.
Here's a bit of the Reuter's Review:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A big-budget Broadway musical adaptation of the classic celebration of eccentricity and morbidity, "The Addams Family," was panned by critics on Friday as bland and boring.

The production, which opened on Thursday, stars Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. It derives from Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons that also inspired the 1960s television series and two 1990s movies.

"You'll laugh a lot, though never during the unmemorable songs, which are supposed to be funny but aren't," said The Wall Street Journal. "You're more than likely to spend a considerable part of the evening wondering how much the set cost."

Critics said an accomplished cast could not rescue generic, bland musical numbers and predictable jokes.

The most scathing review I've read is the one posted in the all-important New York Times.

It starts out a bit like this:
Imagine, if you dare, the agonies of the talented people trapped inside the collapsing tomb called “The Addams Family.” Being in this genuinely ghastly musical — which opened Thursday night at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater and stars a shamefully squandered Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth — must feel like going to a Halloween party in a strait-jacket or a suit of armor. Sure, you make a flashy (if obvious) first impression. But then you’re stuck in the darn thing for the rest of the night, and it’s really, really uncomfortable. Why, you can barely move, and a strangled voice inside you keeps gasping, “He-e-e-lp! Get me out of here!”

New York Musical Previews & Other News

As you may or may not know, there has been much Addams Family news of late. Between the musical previewing in New York, talk of a possible new film adaption by Tim Burton, and an Addams Family book recently released, there has been more than a little news that has gone without coverage in this blog.

This post is a brief list of some highlights that might be worth checking out.

In musical news, by all accounts, the show being preformed in New York is substantially different to that which was seen in Chicago. There is an interesting summary of some of the changes made in this post on broadwayworld.com (beware that some spoilers are contained).

Also, there have been many updates on the official musical's homepage, including cast interviews, cast album release dates, and video interviews with the some of the crew. If you haven't visited the site in a while, it may be about time to stop in.

The Addams Family Blog has been doing a great job of keeping up-to-date with some of the more recent news, including keeping updated on Charles Addams art showings that are going on in New York. Again, I highly recommend checking this site out, too, if you haven't already.

Finally, there has been quite a boom in Addams Family fanfiction writing, as evident on fanfiction.net. Between the fanfiction and Wednesday Addams's twitter account, there should hopefully be enough to keep fans busy between the blog updates posted here. Happy reading!

If the characters in Andrew Lippa's new musical The Addams Family showed up at the The Wild Party depicted in the composer's best-known previous show, they'd probably fit right in with the dissolute members of that decadent bash.

Who could be so creepy and kooky that they'd mingle well with Burrs and Queenie and the rest of the characters in The Wild Party? Why, the Addams Family, of course — Gomez and Morticia and Uncle Fester and the gang. The new musical is the latest link in a cultural chain that began with Charles Addams' original New Yorker cartoons, continued with the 1960s television sitcom, and was resurrected with the 1991 movie "The Addams Family" and its 1993 sequel. The production has a book by Tony Award-nominated Jersey Boys collaborators Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, an ideal cast headed by Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth and is currently trying out in Chicago. When it gets to New York in March 2010, it will mark the Broadway debut of a full Lippa score. (The songwriter previously contributed songs to the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.) Lippa talked to Playbill.com from Chicago, just days before the new show opened in that town.

Addams Family and Munsters Join through Dinner Theater

According to Shibori Girl of of blogspot.com, the Addams family and the Munsters came close to uniting at the Golden Plough Inn in Peddler's Village, PA. Unfortunately, this joining ended in tragedy with the death of Eddie Munster.

While claims of the Munsters appearance in this production are unverified, Without A Cue Productions, LLC has indeed been presenting a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater entitled, "Itt's an Addams Family Mystery," since September. The Dinner Theater is summed up on the peddlersvillage.com website:

It's an Addams Family Reunion and you can be one of the spooky, kooky, or ooky. The family has gathered to renew old ties (and not just the ones at the ends of nooses) and Wednesday has announced a surprise engagement. It's a decidedly odd night, even for the Addamses, as Wednesday is ON her medication, Fester is bitten by the love bug, and with a killer on the loose Gomez and Morticia try to keep the family together (or at least various limbs from wandering off.)

Since the output of Addams Family Broadway news, since the musical previewed, has consisted mostly of odds and ends, you may see a few compilation posts here until December 9th, the date of the official opening. There was recently a small feature on the play in Entertainment Weekly. Also, there was an article in the Chicago Tribune that was accidentally over-looked during archiving on the 13th.

Nathan Lane embraces an emotional Gomez in 'The Addams Family'

Lane was in a strikingly emotional mood a few days before his first public performance as Gomez Addams of "The Addams Family," which he said will be his 17th Broadway show ("that must be more than Marian Seldes"). The musical, now in previews, opens Dec. 9 and will run through Jan. 10 before heading to New York for an April premiere.

He had been coaxed into the project _ and away from another more tenuous Broadway project _ when writer Marshall Brickman called him and said the very thing that torpedoes the defenses of every actor: "We wrote this part with you in mind."

Making a musical of 'The Addams Family' took more than a snap of the fingers for its creators

The very first cartoon depicting members of what eventually would become the Addams Family appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1938.

Standing at the bottom of a stairway, in the dark interior of what seems to be a rather grand home, the couple who will eventually be named Gomez and Morticia are watching as a salesman demonstrates a vacuum cleaner. The caption reads: “Vibrationless, noiseless, and a great time and back-saver. No well-appointed home should be without it.”

Vic Mizzy Passes Away

Vic Mizzy, prolific songwriter and musician, perhaps best known as the writer of the Addams Family theme, passes away at age 93.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The songwriter who wrote the catchy theme songs to "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres" television shows has died. Vic Mizzy was 93.

His manager Jonathan Wolfson says Mizzy died Saturday at his home in Bel Air. He didn't know the cause of death.

Mizzy got his start in vaudeville and wrote songs that were recorded by Dean Martin, Doris Day, Perry Como and Billie Holiday in the 1940s and 50s.

His hits included "The Whole World Is Singing My Song" and "With a Hey and a Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho."

Mizzy has said that he didn't mind if people only remember him for the finger snaps at the start of the "The Addams Family" theme song. After all, he said "two snaps got me a mansion in Bel Air."

Other guests of the convention include Adam West (Batman), James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Biehn (Terminator), and many more.

Michael Jackson's 'Ghosts' Originally Video to Promote Addams Family Values

In an interview with Director Mick Garris about Michael Jackson's little-remembered 38 minute film, Ghosts, Mr. Garris mentions that the film was "originally going to be a video to promote Addams Family Values. In fact, Christina Ricci and the boy who played Pugsley were both in it. We shot for two weeks and never got to the musical numbers."
Apparently, due to circumstances of the time, the movie studio decided that they no longer wished to have Jackson promote their movie, and Jackson was dropped before the promo was finished.

Not just pretty words? Well, according to Dennis of the Campvs, the Addams Family Credo might be just that: pretty words. Dennis, graduate student linguist, translates the meaning of the Addams Family movie's bit of Hollywood Latin, "Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc!":
“Thus do we growl that (our) big toes have,
at this moment, been thrown up from below!”

He then offers a possibly more accurate Latin verse:
“Laeti vescimur nos subacturis.”

Funeral Customs Museum in Danger

Museum of Funeral Customs in Springfield, Illinois is in danger of being closed down. The museum has already ceased normal business hours, changing to appointment only showings. It now faces the real possibility of being closed down completely.

Finally! The long elusive, 1990's Addams Family cartoon can be found--at least in part--on youtube! User acpsd775 has uploaded quite a few Addams Family cartoon episodes.

Summed up on the Unofficial Addams Family Site as "This series is based mostly on the first Addams Family movie, with the same dark humor. Interestingly, though, John Astin returned to the role he had created for the original series," this series is definitely worth taking checking out!

Good buzz is coming out of this week's invitation-only reading of "The Addams Family" musical, with lots of cheers for what one spy calls a "brilliantly funny" cast - Nathan Lane (Gomez), Bebe Neuwirth (Morticia), Kevin Chamberlain (Uncle Fester), Marylouise Burke (Grandmama) and Terence Mann and Jan Maxwell as a "normal" couple.

Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman, who wrote "Jersey Boys," have come up with an original story, taking nothing from either the TV show or the movies. The Addams estate, I'm told, was adamant that the musical be based solely on Charles Addams' New Yorker drawings.

"They have complete control over just about everything on this show, and they rule with an iron fist," a source says of the estate, which is said to collect millions of dollars a year on all things Addams.

The musical is set in the present day, and the Addams family lives in a spooky castle in the middle of Central Park. The plot is a bit like "Meet the Parents," with Gomez and Morticia throwing a dinner party for the parents of their daughter Wednesday's boyfriend.

Among many funny wisecracks, this one got the biggest laugh (for the full effect, imagine Nathan doing one his famous double takes on the punch line):

Morticia: When your mother moved in, it was supposed to be for two weeks. She's been upstairs now for 12 years.

Gomez: My mother? I thought that was your mother!

"The story's a little thin, but they fire a lot of funny jokes at you," says a theater executive, who says he's going to invest in the $10 million show.

Andrew Lippa's score is getting mixed reviews. While Lippa's an accomplished composer ("The Wild Party"), he's not exactly a tunesmith.

"Truthfully, I didn't leave humming any of the songs," one person says. "It's not a bad score by any means, but I think you've got to have a couple of songs that are as catchy as the famous theme."

The cast of this developmental workshop includes Nathan Lane as Gomez, Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia, Kevin Chamberlin as Fester, Zachary James as Lurch, Mary Louise Burke as Grandmama, Terrence Mann, Jan Maxwell and more. As is often the case with readings and workshops, this does not necessarily reflect what the final production casting will be.

As previously announced, the musical will make its world premiere Nov. 13, 2009-Jan. 10, 2010, at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre in Chicago, prior to a spring 2010 launch on Broadway.

With a book by Marshall Brickman and partner Rick Elice (librettists of the 2006 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Jersey Boys) and music and lyrics by Drama Desk Award-winning composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), the musical is wholly original and not based on Addams Family material from other media.

Produced by Elephant Eye Theatrical and Roy Furman, The Addams Family has direction and design by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the creators of Shockheaded Peter.

The Addams Family creative team also includes choreographer Sergio Trujillo, lighting designer Natasha Katz and musical director Mary-Mitchell Campbell.

Addams Family Show Among Top Runners for Wanted Remakes

The Muppet Show has topped a poll of programmes viewers want to see return to TV screens.

The Addams Family, The Wombles, Rainbow and Red Dwarf also featured in the small-screen top 10.

Adults aged between 30 and 40 were asked to list the programmes they would like to see revived.

The Muppet Show, which originally ran from 1976 to 1981 and made famous Jim Henson-created characters such as Miss Piggy, Kermit and Gonzo, grabbed the biggest share of the vote.

The A-Team, the action adventure series of the 1980s famous for catchphrases such as Hannibal Smith's "I love it when a plan comes together", came second.

Crackerjack, the famous children's BBC TV series, was third, followed by the long-running 1980s and 1990s sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf.

Dungeons and Dragons, the US animated series of the 1980s, was fifth, followed by Rainbow, featuring the likes of Zippy, Bungle and George, and The Wombles.

The top ten was completed by Worzel Gummidge, which starred Jon Pertwee as the walking, talking scarecrow from 1979 to 1981, Bewitched, and The Addams Family.

Kevin Murphy, joint managing director of Zed Media, which commissioned the survey, said: "People still have strong emotional attachments to the TV programmes they watched as a child.

"The results show the growing trend for all things retro applies to TV as much as fashion."

"Finally, for the Matroishka Doll set, I did the Addams Family with a character on each half of the nesting doll. It was quite the challenge and they were done in acrylic paint with varnish. Addams Family Musical Sets Dates for Chicago Premiere

Dates and a theater are set for the pre-Broadway world premiere of a new musical version of The Addams Family. Based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams, the show will begin performances on November 13, 2009, at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre in Chicago and will run through January 10, 2010, prior to a Broadway opening planned for the spring of 2010.

Open auditions for “The Addams Family” The Musical are being held in New York on October 29th! For all you Addams Family fans out there who happen to be professional dancers, here are the details:

The Addams Family- The Musical- Equity Chorus Call/Dancers
Producer: Stuart Oken Workshop Contract $560/week minimum (if a 5-day week) or $672/week minimum (if a 6-day week).

Workshop dates: January 14 – 27, 2009.

Seeking: Ensemble Dancers (m/f): 20s – 40s, all ethnicities. Strong classically and technically trained dancers who have a strong contemporary background. Seeking all types, with a quirky sense of movement and style. Seeking dancers who sing very well. Knowledge of tango and flamenco dancing a plus.

Some good things about being in a Workshop Contract production:
In addition to the salary the Actors earn during the Workshop sessions, they also earn a share in the future success of the show. For their contributions to the development of the show, the Actors share in contingent compensation that takes two forms. First, the Actors share in the weekly box office gross when the show is produced under contract; that is, the Actors, as a group, share a percentage (usually 1%) of the gross box office receipts. However, the percentage of gross receipts may increase when there is more than one session of the Workshop. Equity determines each Actor’s share based on the number of days/weeks that the Actor participated in the Workshop.

Second, the Actors share in any subsidiary rights income which is generated by the play. For example, subsidiary rights income can come from royalties from foreign productions, stock and amateur rights, or from the sale of motion picture rights. The Actors’ share of subsidiary rights is usually 1.5% of net receipts.

Those Actors who complete the Workshop must also be offered employment to perform the same role or function in the first subsequent production of the play under a standard Equity contract, or they must be offered no less than four weeks’ minimum salary under the appropriate Equity contract.

Addams Family Fanfiction Challenge!

insanepink of livejournal.com has issued an Addams Family fanfiction challenge! If you're not familiar with the concept, a fanfiction challenge is a call to fiction writers to take up the pen and create a fanfiction story using a specific prompt.

The prompts, set by insanepink, are as follows:

-Morticia and Gomez getting a divorce
-Wednesday and Joel (Joel= Wednesday's love interest in Addams Family Values)
-Addams Family Parallel Universe
-Addams and Munsters Cross over
-The having been separated for ages and they meeting up again.

Addams Family Poll Closed

Our last poll, "In your mind, Uncle Fester is...", has closed and the results are in.
Most polled (55%, with 66 votes) think of Uncle Fester as "Gomez's brother--Fester Addams". The second most popular opinion (21%, with 26 votes) is that Fester is "An Addams at heart--and that's what really matters!" After that, "Morticia's Uncle--Fester Frump!" (15%, at 19 votes), followed far behind with "Probably an Addams, but not Gomez's brother" (4%, 5 votes); "Not actually human" (1%, 2 votes); and "Not actually a relative at all" (0%, 1 vote).

It's interesting to see that the movie version of Fester's relationship to the family seems be be most prevalent. Thanks to all those who participated. Be sure to keep your eyes open for our next poll, which will be added to the top, right hand corner of this blog soon.

Jan Langenfeld and John Hadley had a wedding any Addams Family fan would be proud of:
A spooky 'I do'
They were creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky. And very much in love.

When Jan Langenfeld and John Hadley got married last October, they wanted a fun wedding they would remember forever. And so they decided to capitalize on Langenfeld’s favorite holiday — Halloween — with an Addams Family theme.

“I came as Morticia and John as Gomez,” said Langenfeld, a nurse at SwedishAmerican Hospital. “The best man (came) as Uncle Fester, and my sister as Wednesday. My brother walked me down the aisle; he was Pugsly. Thing, the hand, was our ring bearer. John found him on eBay, and he came down the aisle with our wedding rings.”

While not everyone dressed in Addams Family gear — the wedding’s 55 guests were warned in advance it was a costume party — everybody had a costume of some sort. Even the servers and bartenders were dressed up, and one friend came as a tiki bar (his date was the waitress).

The reception was decorated as a graveyard with rats, bats and goblins, and Halloween music was played throughout the night. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, the couple had cupcakes with spiders on them.

According to The Evening Times Online, one of the dresses worn by Christina Ricci in Addams Family Values is currently on display, along with many other ironical film and music-related items, at Paisley Museum & Art Gallery in Paisley, Scotland.

I do not want to repeat my Blake vs. Potter debate, but comparing The Addams Family to The Munsters is like comparing Laverne & Shirley to Cagney & Lacey. Other than the fact that these were macabre sitcoms mocking the nuclear families that were on the air at the time, these two shows and families were very different. For example if Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) wanted to join the Boy Scouts his parents Herman & Lily (Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo) would be thrilled where as if Pugsley Addams (Ken Weatherwax) wanted to join the Boy Scouts his parents Gomez & Morticia (John Astin & Carolyn Jones) would be mortified and hope that this was just a phase.

M&MS vs. Addams Family Lawsuit

Hot on the heels of a lawsuit charging they infringed on the image of Times Square icon "The Naked Cowboy," the makers of M&Ms have been slapped with a $10 million federal suit for using characters from the old "Addams Family" TV series in their dark-chocolate candy ads.

A freelance entertainment broker is suing Mars Inc., claiming she originally pitched the concept of having characters from the 1960s-era show interact with animated M&Ms in an ad to cross-promote the release of an "Addams Family" DVD.
